Evaluation of Alternatives

Pilotlight was established to make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. This 2-year-old nonprofit has become the cornerstone of our program in the City. Problem Statement of the Case Study

I am a researcher at Pilotlight, a nonprofit organization in the Bay Area, California that provides funding to charities that make a positive impact in the community. We launched our pilot project in November, 2021, where our team is piloting our software and analytics tools with ten new charities. In order to do this, they hired an IT team to develop a web-based platform with a scalable backend that could scale to handle over a million users simultaneously. After several months of development, they hit a major problem: their development infrastructure was too limited to handle the load of over a million users. As a result, the project stalled, causing a loss of donations and support from volunteers.
